HOMILY

Saint Paul’s short sermon to the Athenians is a wonderfully clear and concise teaching about the history of God’s work of creation and salvation and perhaps the best summary that we can find. God created all that exists in the universe and He gives life and breath to all living things, including us. The world is the place God has given us to live out our lives, and He has given us the freedom with which to search for Him. God offers us his love and friendship.

Human beings in all human cultures and nations are inclined to make images and statues to try to make visible our Creator, but these are mostly fictitious images made according to our own imaginations. God did not leave humanity in ignorance but made men and women prophets to perceive his will and to give their testimony to the rest of society. In the fullness of time, God’s own divine Son took human flesh in the womb of Mary, his Mother, and He made visible in Himself the goodness, love, and mercy of his Eternal Father. Because Jesus was so good, we could not endure Him; so, we killed Him, but the Father raised him up from the dead.

We will all meet our Creator God, our Lord and Saviour, face to face at the end of our lives. In that moment, we will see our whole lives replayed before our eyes, and we will finally know the whole truth about ourselves, about others, and about God. If, during this life on Earth, we have treated God with doubt, suspicion, or contempt; then, that moment of truth will feel like a harsh judgement, but it will be our own fault. On the other hand, if we approach God humbly and with docility and trust; then, that encounter will be a moment of great joy and consolation.

The ways of the Lord are made wonderfully manifest in this episode with Saint Paul. We see how some people scoffed – ridiculing the apostle – while others wanted to hear more. They were docile to the Holy Spirit who began to enlighten their minds, hearts, and spirits.

“O my Jesus, I trust in You. Immaculate Mother Mary, pray for us. St. Joseph, pray for us. We give praise to You, O God, the Father, + the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

Prayer after Communion                                    Closing

“Lord, may all that we suffer break open our hard hearts; then, fill us with your Holy Spirit, so that we may learn to obey and love like Jesus your Son, Mary and Joseph, and all the saints.

Mother Mary, pray for us. Saint Joseph, pray for us.

Christ is risen, alleluia!” “He is truly risen, alleluia!”           Blessing and Dismissal

HOMILY

God weeps in Ukraine. Though risen from the dead, Jesus is as fully human as we ourselves are. On Earth, He did not know the future any more than we do. Jesus told the disciples, and He tells us, not to be concerned about the end of the world because only the Father knows when it will be. What we do know for certain is that our own life will definitely come to an end.

We are witnesses to the testimony of the Acts of the Apostles of which we just heard a brief episode. As it was in those days; so is it in our own day. Some believe in Jesus and accept him, but others do not. As a man, Jesus Himself needed to cling to the will of his Father in heaven. We are called to do the same. How are we doing these days in our relationship of faith in God?

We grow in faith the same way that we grow in body. When we enjoy our daily meals, we eat only as much as we can safely enjoy and digest. Food enables our body to replenish itself by restoring cells and producing new ones. It is the same for our life in the spirit. We hunger and thirst for God; each day we eat spiritual meals by hearing and pondering the Word of God.

The Gospel tells us that Mary constantly pondered the wonders which God was doing in her life, in Joseph’s life, and in the life of her son Jesus, who was also the Son of God. Mary often did not fully understand what God was doing; she needed to ponder these things until her spirit could receive the light only God gives. We need to do the same. It isn’t enough to quickly hear the Word of God and then just get back to our daily routine. The work we do in and out of our home is good. Through our work we participate in God’s ongoing creation of the universe.

At the same time, we need to ponder God’s words and the things Jesus did. We need to accept God’s words as true and ponder his actions as a pregnant woman carries a child; until the new life God is creating in us is fully grown and ready to be visibly manifest in the world.

“O my Jesus, I trust in You. Immaculate Mother Mary, pray for us. St. Joseph, pray for us. We give praise to You, O God, the Father, + the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

Mother Mary, pray for us. Saint Joseph, pray for us.

    HOMILY

This church is so vast that the voices of the assembly are lost in the space and we hardly hear you. I have the advantage of the microphone.

The ancient Easter greeting that we used at the beginning of Mass shows astonishment at Jesus’ resurrection, which indicates the authenticity of the sentiments and of the greeting. “Christ is risen, alleluia! He is truly risen, alleluia!” It’s amazing, unbelievable, but it’s true. The women were at the tomb Easter morning and they saw him! The Apostles too! We weren’t there, but we believe! Some refuse to believe.

We all just heard Jesus say that He came so that the world might be saved by believing in Him, but that those who don’t believe condemn themselves, and the reason is that they prefer the darkness of their evil deeds and don’t like the light because it exposes them. Well, who does Jesus think He is, anyway? Actually, He doesn’t think, He knows He is the Son of God.

The real question is “Who do we think we are?” Now, in all I’m about to say, I include myself; so, please, don't take it personally, or don’t get all upset; actually, we should take these words personally. So, please consider carefully my remarks, because time is short. We have no time to waste. Today may be our last day on Earth, or yours; so, we must be ready. Our insecurities and fears cause us to judge everyone and harden our hearts. That’s not good.

We’re an arrogant bunch, when you really look at it, we human beings. God the Most Holy Trinity lives in perfect harmony of love from all eternity. We live only a few years, and without even trying our mind won’t stop making judgements all day long on everyone and everything we see, hear, think, and feel, even God. We even judge God; especially when He does what we don't want or don't like, or doesn't do what we want.

St. Teresa of Avila said that when we don’t like God’s gifts, we’re likely to throw them back in his face; ready cash is all we want, she said. Well, we’ve all been infected by a virus far worse than SARS-CoV-2 which causes Covid-19. The sin of our origins, the original sin, causes our insecurity and fear, driving every evil, like what’s happening in Ukraine, and 24 other places in the world, and in all other conflicts in human history.

If we're ever going to become the missionary disciples Jesus desires, to help Him bring God's mercy to others in the world; if we're ever going to become as Jesus desires us to be, we need to trust Him completely. Jesus calls us to trust Him, to allow our hearts to be broken by the suffering of others, as well as our own, and do all we can to alleviate the plight of others. The Father calls us to contemplate Jesus in his agony and allow Him, the sight of Him, to break our hard hearts so we can be grateful for all that He does for us.

“O my Jesus, I trust in You. Immaculate Mother Mary, pray for us. St. Joseph, pray for us. We give praise to You, O God, the Father, + the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

HOMILY

When a pregnant woman enters into labour, it is a time of great distress for her and her loved ones. However, it is also a time of great hope, for a new life is about to leave its place of incubation – where it has been growing and developing for 9 months – to enter into the light of day, into this great, big, beautiful world. At the last supper, Jesus said: When a woman is in labor, she has pain, because her hour has come. But when her child is born, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world.  So, you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.”

This is why Jesus approached his coming passion with fear and trembling, but also with peace and serenity and deep confidence in the will and the love of his Father in heaven. Jesus now invites us to walk with Him in his passion, death and resurrection beginning tomorrow.

As Pope Francis reflected in his inspiring homily this Palm and Passion Sunday, we are amazed to see how – even in the throes of his excruciating suffering on the Cross – Jesus turned away from awareness of Himself in order to give his compassionate attention to others. His first words were to forgive and to excuse his executioners: Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” When a child is born, the head must come first for it to live and not die. It is the same with all of us who make up the body of Christ. Jesus, our Head, suffered his passion first and then rose from the dead. So now must we, the rest of his Body, follow Him by accepting to enter into our own passion and eventual death. We accept to enter into God’s time.

This is what we do at every single Holy Mass. We approach God our Father and offer our lives in trust. “O my Jesus, I trust in You. Immaculate Mother Mary, pray for us. St. Joseph, pray for us. We give praise to You, O God, the Father, + the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

HOMILY

Jesus is the Son of God as well as the son of Mary. Saint Joseph was not his biological father; it was the Holy Spirit who caused Jesus to be conceived in Mary's womb. Dear brothers and sisters, we live in a world gone mad. Jesus walked our Earth for a mere 33 years and then was executed because when evil people looked at Jesus, they saw the evil in themselves reflected back as in a mirror; so, they shattered that mirror. When good people look at Jesus, they feel loved by God.

The reality of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, which we are preparing to celebrate at Easter, and 50 days later - 10 days after Jesus' Ascension into Heaven - the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost into the apostles and disciples gathered in prayer around Mary, transformed these frightened followers of Jesus into fearless proclaimers of the good news that God is love. We no longer need to be afraid of being condemned by the law, because if we believe in Jesus and receive the Holy Spirit, God’s love in us will enable us to focus no longer on avoiding sin but instead on practicing love: love of God and love of our neighbor as ourselves. In other words, Jesus is making it possible for us to rise above concerns about the law, in other words to do more than simply trying to follow the law.

At first, the Roman Empire and society embraced Jesus Christ and his Gospel. Over time, succeeding generations did not know God and embraced worldly ways. The Church tried to impose the good news with authority, but that does not work. People and nations have come to think that if you practice any kind of love at all, you can do whatever you want. Our behavior shows we don’t know what real love is as a human race: terrorism and war, destruction of the environment, rejecting the poor and others, using people sexually, aborting unborn babies; we need to repent and change.

In light of the world’s troubles, we feel helpless and, in the face of our own weakness, we might despair, but God is not idle. All is not lost. All Jesus asks of us is that each of us personally repent and turn away from evil and sin; at least to desire to do so, and turn to the Lord. We are to pray, fast, and give to the poor: to love others, even enemies, to forgive, and put others ahead of ourselves.  “O my Jesus, I trust in You. Immaculate Mother Mary, pray for us. Saint Joseph, pray for us. We give praise to You, O God, the Father, + the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
